HBO Goes With Adobe For 'TV Everywhere'

HBO will provide encrypted video content to distribution partners for "TV Everywhere"-style services using Adobe Systems' Flash multimedia platform and PlayerBox which can make a stand-alone webplayer, although the premium programmer said it's amenable to working with other Internet-video technologies.
HBO's broadband-video complement for TV subscribers, dubbed HBO Go, will use Flash and the Adobe-developed encrypted Real-Time Messaging Protocol, referred to as "RTMPE," HBO chief technology officer Bob Zitter said in an interview.
"The Flash player is relatively ubiquitous across PCs and Macs," Zitter said. "It was important to us to make this offering work on Macs as well as PCs."
At the same time, HBO will work on an operator-by-operator basis before the full TV Everywhere vision -- meaning any cable, satellite or telco TV customers can access content from any participating site -- is in place industrywide. "If the distributor wants to use a different security wrapper that will be up to them," Zitter said.
Last month HBO said it will participate in Comcast's 5,000-home nationwide trial of On Demand Online. That will give HBO subscribers in the beta test access to full-length episodes of original series like True Blood, The Wire and The Sopranos, as well as movies including Transformers and The Dark Knight.
For the trial, Comcast will use the adaptive-rate Internet video player from Move Networks, with video provided via its Fancast and Comcast.net portals. Zitter said HBO enlisted consultants to assess the Move Networks player, and he said the technology is "encrypting the content to our satisfaction."
"As we roll out HBO Go, we're working through the technical aspects on a bilateral basis with the distributor that we're working with," Zitter said. Having a common Internet video platform across the industry "may have some value," he said, but noted that HBO's main interest is that what distributors are using "is secure and robust, and we have the right to approve that."
In March, HBO and two other Time Warner Inc. companies -- Turner Broadcasting System and Warner Bros. Entertainment -- announced a strategic alliance with Adobe to develop "next-generation video" across multiple distribution platforms.
Initially the video for HBO Go will be in standard-definition resolution, encoded with the MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding standard compression format. "HD is something we're contemplating," Zitter said.
HBO, in a test with Time Warner Cable's Wisconsin division initiated in January 2008, used Microsoft's Windows Media digital rights management system. However, Zitter said, Microsoft does not have a cross-platform DRM approach for streaming video.
"When we begin to offer downloads [via HBO Go], which is not in 2009 but is on our road map, we will make a separate decision for [encryption] technology," Zitter said.
He added that HBO has used digital-video "fingerprinting" technologies for several years to identify when the programmer's content is being misappropriated on the Internet.

Microsoft offers patches to ward off ActiveX attacks

Microsoft released an emergency patch on Tuesday to protect Internet Explorer users from a hole in technology used to build ActiveX controls and other Web application components that has been targeted in attacks.
A critical patch for all versions of IE will protect consumers, while a security update for Visual Studio will help developers fix the controls and components they built that could be affected.
Microsoft also has had discussions with Adobe, Sun, and Google about some components involving their software that are affected, said Mike Reavey, director of the Microsoft Security Response Center. He declined to elaborate.
Internet Explorer users running Flash Player and Shockwave Player are vulnerable, Adobe said in a blog post that contains links to the Adobe security bulletins for those products.
A Google representative said the company has been working with Microsoft on the issues but declined to comment further. And a Sun representative did not respond to a call seeking comment.
Cisco will release free software updates for any of its software that is affected by the vulnerability and is making available workarounds that mitigate the issue, the company said in a detailed advisory.
The company released two security updates that deal with a vulnerability in Microsoft's Active Template Library, which is used to build components for Web applications and which could be targeted to take control of computers of Web surfers visiting sites hosting malicious code.
The critical update, MS-09034, is targeted at IE users and the other, MS-09035, is targeted at Visual Studio developers and is rated moderate. It affects Visual Studio 2005 and 2008.
"A library can get used in a lot of places, and vulnerabilities in libraries are challenging," Reavey said. "It's an industry-wide problem when (vulnerabilities) do happen."
"The vulnerability is in the controls, not IE, however to provide protections while developers update the controls, IE (versions that are patched will block attacks)," he said.
The company warned on Friday that a security update would come on Tuesday instead of waiting for the next Patch Tuesday cycle on August 11. This is only the ninth out-of-band release Microsoft has had, according to Reavey.
Microsoft first warned about the ActiveX issue on July 6, saying a vulnerability in its Video ActiveX Control could allow an attacker to take control of a PC if the user visits a malicious Web site and attackers were exploiting the hole. The company offered a workaround for the issue.
During the July Patch Tuesday release the following week, Microsoft still did not have a patch ready and was recommending a manual "kill bit" method to disable ActiveX, or sending customers to a "Fix it for me" Web site.
However, researchers figured out a way to get around the kill bit protection mechanism, thus rendering it ineffective and exposing the system to attack, said Eric Schultze, chief technology officer at Shavlik Technologies.
"Some security researchers found that they were able to bypass the kill bit function and still execute certain controls," he said in a statement on Tuesday. "A presentation on how this is done is slated for tomorrow afternoon at the Black Hat Conference" in Las Vegas. To convert video to Flash.
"We were aware of limited attacks on the Microsoft kill bit control where the underlying issue was this vulnerability. As a result of those attacks we released the bulletin to protect customers...but that created chatter," Reavey said. "We saw more details released and we had these updates ready so we released them now instead of waiting for (attacks) to get worse."
The IE patch also resolves three privately reported vulnerabilities that could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted Web page using the browser.
Tyler Reguly, senior security researcher for nCircle, criticized Microsoft for not fixing the underlying issue with a proper patch and said the update could put other software vendors at risk. "Although Microsoft has protected against the kill bit bypass and has patched the public ATL vulnerabilities, there has been no mention or reference to fixing the issue in msvidctl.dll itself," he wrote in a statement. "One has to question what the release of the ATL patch means for other software vendors," he added. "We also have to wonder if they are now more vulnerable than they were previously. They now have to obtain this patch and recompile and release their tools. This means until that process can occur, malicious individuals can reverse the patches to pinpoint each of the vulnerabilities and target third-party software. It's a race to see who will get there first, and the vendors didn't get a head start."
In response, a Microsoft representative provided this comment: "As part of our overall response to the ATL issue, we are continuing our investigation for Microsoft components and controls that may be affected by the ATL issue and will update customers as appropriate throughout the process." More information about the vulnerabilities and fixes is in this advisory. Microsoft also scheduled a Webcast at 1 p.m. PDT on Tuesday to answer customer questions.

64-bit: Apple does not show the example

With the release of Snow Leopard, Apple encourages developers to rewrite their applications in 64 bits. But the least we can say is that the Cupertino firm really does not show an example. Indeed, none of the software suite Final Cut Studio is 64 bit compatible. According to John Gruber of Daring Fireball, they are all still in Carbon (read about this: no 64 bit Carbon).

Adobe had been much criticism about this just before the release of CS4 which can convert video to Flash. The editor reported that the Windows version of Photoshop is optimized 64-bit unlike the Mac version. For the latter, Adobe had indicated that it would take at least wait until the release of CS5. Photoshop is a large project written in Carbon, Adobe developers needed more time to "dust off" his code. At the time, John Nack had estimated that the change from Carbon to Cocoa could affect up to one million lines of code for a program like Photoshop (read: Cocoa and 64-bit Photoshop CS5 menu).

Apple does not, therefore, better and Adobe has not provided any information on this topic. The Californian company may attend the exit and widespread Snow Leopard to tackle this enormous project and market a version of Final Cut Studio that is both 64-bit and optimized for Snow Leopard. Many of these technologies in the latter (OpenCL, Grand Central ...) it would probably be thrilled.

Hackers may slip through hole found in Adobe tools

Cybercriminals may have a clear path to spread mayhem on computers this week by taking advantage of a newly discovered vulnerability in Adobe's (ADBE) ubiquitous Flash video player and Acrobat Reader, the widely used tool for opening PDF documents.
Since early July, troublemakers have been e-mailing PDF files with corrupted Flash video clips and hacking into websites to implant them. These clips, when activated, enable attackers to quickly install malicious programs on the user's computer. And convert video to flash.
Criminals typically take control of PCs, turning them into obedient "bots." They can use bot networks to steal data, siphon cash from online financial accounts, spread spam and trigger promotions to sell fake anti-virus programs.
The number of attacks could soar this week as Adobe scrambles to develop an emergency patch by Friday. The company recently began issuing security patches once a quarter, with the next update scheduled on Sept. 8.
"The volume of cybercrime has been increasing, so we've stepped up our efforts to supply best-in-class security," says Rob Tarkoff, Adobe's senior vice president and general manager of business productivity.
But even that might not solve the problem. Adobe alerts computer users every seven days about software updates that can include security patches, but users often defer installing such updates.
As a result, "We may see a broad-scale explosion of attacks," says Paul Royal, a senior researcher at Purewire.
The security firm has already found a booby-trapped e-mail sent to a corporate executive.
Last week, another security firm, Finjan Software, found several dozen legitimate Web pages carrying poisoned Flash clips.
Tarkoff says Adobe is doing all it can.
"Every software product is a target," he says. The challenge is to find a way to keep offering new features without creating new security problems. "That's (the balance that) we're focused on striking."
That balancing act may grow more difficult as cybercriminals probe for more weaknesses in Adobe programs.
Some 43% of the 1,500 cyberattacks identified by security firm F-Secure in the first six months of 2009 were directed at Acrobat Reader, up from nearly 29% last year.
That puts Acrobat Reader ahead of Microsoft Word, targeted in 40% of this year's attacks.
"Adobe has become the victim of its own success," says Don Leatham, director of solutions and strategy at security firm Lumension.
"They've become a very juicy target, and they need to significantly increase their efforts to secure and stabilize their code."

Adobe investigating zero-day bug in Flash

Researchers on Wednesday said they have uncovered attacks in the wild in which malicious Acrobat PDF files are exploiting a vulnerability in Flash and dropping a Trojan onto computers.
The situation could affect tons of users since Flash exists in all popular browsers, is available in PDF files, and is largely operating system-independent.
Any software that uses Flash could be vulnerable to the attack, according to Symantec. Adobe Reader is vulnerable because its Flash interpreter is vulnerable, said Paul Royal, principal researcher at Purewire, a Web security services provider.
In a post on its Web site, Adobe said it "is aware of reports of a potential vulnerability in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.1.2 and Adobe Flash Player 9 and 10. We are currently investigating this potential issue and will have an update once we get more information."
"The authors of the exploit have managed to take a bug and turn it into a reliable exploit using a heap spray technique," Patrick Fitzgerald writes on a Symantec Security blog post.
"Typically an attacker would entice a user to visit a malicious Web site or send a malicious PDF via e-mail," he writes. "Once the unsuspecting user visits the Web site or opens the PDF this exploit will allow further malware to be dropped onto the victim's machine. The malicious PDF files are detected as Trojan.Pidief.G and the dropped files as Trojan Horse."
It appears the exploit was first developed about two weeks ago, Royal said. The bug itself has been around since December 2008.
The hole is exploitable on Windows XP and Vista users are protected if User Account Control (UAC) is enabled, Symantec said.
US-CERT offered information about workarounds on its Web site:
• Disable Flash in Adobe Reader 9 on Windows platforms by renaming the following files: "%ProgramFiles%\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\authplay.dll" and "%ProgramFiles%\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\rt3d.dll".
• Disable Flash Player or selectively enable Flash content as described in the "Securing Your Web Browser" document.

Adobe offers up more Flash technology to open source Move follows Microsoft’s Linux effort by a day; Canonical also makes open source move

Adobe Systems will offer more of its Flash rich media application platform up to open source Tuesday, a move viewed by analysts as reactive to the fierce competition Adobe faces in the rich Internet application space from the Microsoft Silverlight platform.
Also in the open source realm Tuesday, Canonical, commercial sponsor of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, will offer code for the Launchpad software development and collaboration platform in an open source format.
Adobe will make available via open source the company's OSMF (Open Source Media Framework) and Text Layout Framework. Formerly part of the "Strobe" project, OSMF allows for software-based media players to be built based on the Flash platform. Individuals could, for example, add new functionality around the Flash Player.
Text Layout Framework allows users to "to do all the things you want to do with text to make it really cool" on the Flash platform, said McAllister. Sophisticated typography capabilities can be added to Web applications.
The two offerings follow previous Adobe efforts to open source parts of the platform. Previous Flash technologies released via open source have included Flex and its compilers, and the Tamarin virtual machine. Specifications also have been released for streaming formats (convert video to Flash)
"People quite often think that the Flash platform is a closed platform, Adobe-only," McAllister said. "What we're doing is continuing this commitment to making the unique features of the Flash platform open."
Although Adobe insisted its latest open source efforts were not done as any sort of response to Microsoft's Silverlight, analysts nonetheless saw a Microsoft angle.
"It's yet another example of the serve and volley going [on] in the RIA space," said Jeffrey Hammond, principal analyst for application development at Forrester. "Adobe and Microsoft are pushing each other hard, and as a result, the state of the art for RIAs is advancing at an amazing rate."
"Adobe is in a race with Microsoft for RIAs, and open source is a powerful way for Adobe to level the playing field considering Microsoft's huge mindshare and adoption among developers," said Melissa Webster, program vice president for content and digital media technologies at IDC.
The core Flash Player and Flex Builder IDE remain unavailable to open source. " McAllister said. "There's code inside the Flash Player that we don't own," such as codec technology, he said. Flex Builder, meanwhile, is built atop the open source Eclipse IDE.
Still, developers have more open source options with Adobe than with Silverlight, said Webster. She also cited Adobe's Open Screen Project as an example of openness.
"Yes, the Flash Player remains Adobe-proprietary, however with the Open Screen Project, developers can write their own servers to stream media to the Flash Player," Webster said.
Adobe's OSMF and Text Layout Framework better enable companies to take advantage of capabilities of Flash 10 without having to understand all the "nuts and bolts of low-level ActionScript calls and functions," said Hammond. ActionScript is the programming language for the Flash platform.
Adobe is working with Akamai to coordinate OSMF with Akamai's Open Video Player initiative. The companies will provide a framework enabling partners such as developers and content owners to build new services with high-end features.
Canonical's Launchpad, meanwhile, lets developers host and share code for free using the Bazaar version control system. Developers now can contribute directly to Launchpad themselves.
"Launchpad is designed to accelerate collaboration between open source projects," said Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth, in a statement released by the company.
"Making Launchpad itself open source fulfills a long term intention to give the users of Launchpad the ability to improve the service they use every day," Shuttleworth said.
While open source projects are hosted for free on Launchpad, closed source projects can use the service for a fee.

Adobe Offering Insecure Reader Software

Despite making a commitment earlier this year to scrutinize its code for bugs more closely, Adobe is offering insecure software on its Web site.
Adobe's Web site makes Adobe Reader 9.10 available to users. Yet in May the company released Reader 9.11 to address at least one critical vulnerability. And in June the company released Reader 9.12 to fix nine critical vulnerabilities.
Secunia, a computer security company based in Denmark, said its Personal Software Inspector (PSI) tool will help users identify Adobe's out-of-date software.
Mikkel Winther, PSI partner manager, said in an e-mailed statement, that PC users need to be diligent about patching. "They need to patch all their vulnerable programs and they need to do so as fast as possible after the patch has been issued from the vendor," he said. "Failing to do so is playing Russian Roulette with your IT security."
In an e-mailed statement, an Adobe spokesperson said, "Adobe Reader 9.1 for Windows is the most recent full installer of the product. Adobe Reader 9.1.1 and 9.1.2 for Windows are patches that require Adobe Reader 9.1 to be present. This is the reason users are offered Adobe Reader 9.1 via the 'Get Adobe Reader' page on Adobe.com. Once Adobe Reader 9.1 is installed, the Adobe Updater will subsequently offer the Adobe Reader 9.1.1 and 9.1.2 patches. Or, alternately, the end user can manually apply the patches via the Product updates section of our Web site."
The problem with this approach is that there's a window of vulnerability between the time that the user downloads the software and the time that the software gets patched by Adobe's update tool.
Adobe didn't immediately respond to a follow-up question about how long that window of vulnerability might last.
That period of vulnerability might be extended if the user declines to accept, or defers, an update because he or she does not want to be interrupted at the moment the updater requests authorization.
Were a user without Reader installed to click on a malicious PDF file on a Web site, the user's computer would be at risk because it would download a vulnerable version of Reader to open the unsafe PDF.
Update: Adobe says the the window of vulnerability is small because its updater tries to update Reader immediately and every seven days thereafter, automatically. However, the company acknowledges that the scenario suggested by Secunia -- clicking on a malicious PDF without Reader installed -- could lead to a compromised system.
An Adobe spokesperson explained, "The updater runs on a separate thread the main Reader process, so a user double-clicking on a PDF file would usually open the file (and trigger a possible attack) before the update manager could prompt the user to apply an update. The updater does not block the main Reader process from executing."
The company says it continues to look at ways to "to further narrow the window of exposure." And of course you can not use it to convert video to Flash.

Suspects Open Fire On Police, 5 Officers Injured

An early morning shoot out Thursday in Jersey City, New Jersey has left two suspects dead and five officers injured - in what may have been the result of a police department investigation into an armed robbery last week, officials said.

The injured officers have been identified as Frank Molina Jr., 35, Michael Camacho, 25, Marc DiNardo, 37, Marc Lavelle, 43, and Dennis Mitchell, whose age has not been identified.
According to Jersey City police, at around 5:15 a.m. an armed black man and woman, wearing long robes and black hoodies, shot at officers at 24 Reed Street in Jersey City. One resident told PIX News that she heard "intense gunfire" as officers returned fire.

In fact, one of the suspects, who have tentatively been identified as 32-year-old Hassan A. Shakur and 23-year-old Amanda Anderson, shedded an outer garment to access a pump shotgun, which is, according to Jersey City Police Chief Thomas Comey, a combat weapon.
PIX News learned that at around 6:45 a.m. the suspects, were 'neutralized.' Jersey City police confirmed Shakur and Anderson were shot and killed by officers. They were apparently cornered in a building, on the corner of Reed Street and Bergen Avenue, which was first searched and evacuated.

Earlier, the pair were able to escape police and an intense manhunt for them included all New Jersey police units. Later, Port Authority police units, K-9 Units, New Jersey State troopers and Emergency Services Unit snipers were called to the scene of the shooting to assist local police in the search that included area rooftops.

Residents told PIX News they saw snipers on rooftops and officers jumping from rooftop to rooftop possibly in pursuit of the suspects,. In addition, cops said that the building where the suspects were subdued is known for drug sales activity and believe the gunfire began with a drug deal gone wrong.

"It was a guy selling drugs and he probably sold some bad drugs and the guy came back to retaliate," said a local resident who witnessed the shooting. "So when they seen the cops coming that's when they shot at the cops. That's probably how they cop got shot. Then they ran into the alleyway so they must have went into the window from the back and go in through the window on the first floor."

According to residents, violence has plagued the area and surrounding communities for many years, leaving some unfazed by the bloodshed that happens on a regular basis. Although they say it happens all the time, some neighbors who spoke to PIX News described Thursday's shootings as "intense" and at times "frightening."

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Jersey City Police Chief Thomas Comey expressed outrage at how gun violence has become almost accepted in the area and lashed out at loopholes in the law that continue to allow such deadly weapons to be on the street and in the hands of criminals.

"Somebody's gotta wake up and smell the coffee, and say enough is enough," Comey said about taking illegal guns off the streets of the community. "Stop being afraid of the NRA, and start being afraid of our own rights."

Molina a 15-year veteran of the force, who was shot in the back, remains in the Jersey City Medical Center for observation. Camacho, a five-year-veteran, who was shot in the neck, remains in critical condition, as does DiNardo, a 10-year veteran, who was shot in the face. Lavelle, a 20-year veteran, who was shot in the leg, was treated and released, as was Mitchell, a seven-year veteran of the Port Authority police force, who was shot in the arm.

Witnesses say one officer was bleeding from his face and PIX videographer John Fine assisted the male officer into an ambulance. The officer told PIX News that he was, "okay despite the way he looks." He may have been one of the officers who was grazed with a bullet.

Authorities believe Shakur and Anderson may have been involved with a June shooting caught on surveillance tape, but are currently waiting for fingerprint results before making a solid identification.

President Barack Obama, who was visiting Holmdel, New Jersey today, attending a fundraiser at the P&C Art Center for a fundraiser event held by Gov. Jon Corzine, spoke to reporters and emphasized the dangers officers through on a daily basis.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of those hurt," Obama said. The shooting "shows the sacrifice our law enforcement officers and their families go through every day." And convert video to Flash.

Adobe Releases First Beta of ColdFusion 9

Adobe Systems this week released the public beta of the next version of its ColdFusion Web development platform. The new version, dubbed ColdFusion 9, will come with an optional integrated development environment (IDE).
By adding the new IDE, dubbed ColdFusion Builder, Adobe is adding capabilities for more sophisticated developers that ColdFusion has lacked. Among other features, Adobe said it will offer a more customized and extensible development environment for coding data-driven applications, offer server management and debugging.
Originally developed by Allair in the mid 1990s and retained by Adobe when it acquired Macromedia, Adobe said there 800,000 ColdFusion developers. But it faces steep competition including Ruby on Rails, Java Server Pages and Microsoft's ASP.NET and others.
"There are a variety of options that were not there a few years ago," said Gartner analyst Eric Knipp. But he added, the new upgrade is substantial and will likely appeal to the more advanced ColdFusion developers. "A lot of the features that are in ColdFusion 9 are features that the advanced ColdFusion developer community has been clamoring for, for a long time."
Notably is the ability to access any part the language from the ColdFusion scripting language, CF Script, and its support for object relational mapping (ORM) to databases via integration with Hibernate, he said.
ColdFusion 9 will integrate with Adobe's forthcoming Flash Builder 4 framework, released to beta last month "For the first time we are really able to offer a full server side to client side development work flow, with all of our tools and our technology," said Adam Lehman, Adobe's ColdFusion product manager.
"Cold Fusion Builder is an Eclipse based plug-in similar to the Flash Builder, so you basically are installing one inside each other. If I am developing server side code and I want to kick over to write some client access code, and I am in the Flex [Flash] world, all of a sudden I am in the same IDE. We've done a lot to maintain a lot of the fidelity between the two"
The Hibernate support will make it easier developers to provide bi-directional synchronization to databases by providing support for Hibernate-based object relational mapping (ORM). Through the integration, Lehman said developers will be able to access all of the Hibernate internals.
"Today developers spend a lot of time taking that tabular data and basically converting SQL into CFCs ColdFusion Components when they are writing SQL code for inserts and updates and then moving that into this object model," Lehman said. "Because we are basically removing SQL that means we are truly building database independent applications."
While the ORM support should be welcome by ColdFusion developers, Gartner's Knipp said that capability that is now expected. "I don’t know it’s something that's going to win people over to the language, it might keep them from leaving," he said.
Also new in ColdFusion 9 is Server Manager, a Flex-based AIR application that will allow for the administration of ColdFusion Servers. Developers can run the manager on the desktop and control settings and receive alerts, Lehman said. "You can deploy a data source or update our JVM arguments or even deploy a hot fix," he said.
On the integration side, while ColdFusion 8 introduced support for native .NET code and Exchange, ColdFusion 9 adds native support for Microsoft SharePoint services. Developers can build Web Parts in SharePoint via the ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML), including support for single sign on.
"Everything ColdFusion has access to can now be exposed to SharePoint Server, but we also have a way to talk to the SharePoint back-end services, so if you are building an application that needs to interact with a document repository or some of the content management features, you can do that with native CFML, you don’t have to learn any .NET APIs or anything like that," Lehman said.
The new release will also allow developers and users to create, read and update Excel spreadsheets, generate PDFs from Word and PowerPoint, and create Flash presentations from PowerPoint,
For Java developers, ColdFusion 9 will integrate with key portlet servers via support for JSR-168, JSR 268 and Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP).
The new release will also include Adobe's Blaze DS, which will support high speed Flash remoting.
Lehman is not saying when ColdFusion is going to be released but he indicated the company is hoping to ship by the end of the year. Pricing was not disclosed.

Software That Makes Twitter So Much Tweeter

Most people who aren’t familiar with Twitter are eager to list the reasons why they don’t use this social-networking service. It’s for narcissists. It’s for teenagers. It’s for people who have nothing better to do. It’s a forum for oversharing. While all of these things may be true in some cases, I find Twitter’s 140-character messaging network to be an incredibly useful tool in my everyday life.
I use Twitter as my personalized news feed by following people who “tweet” (write updates) about things that interest me. In one glance I can read White House correspondent Mark Knoller’s tweets about President Obama’s activities, a recipe tweeted by Martha Stewart and WSJ.com tweets with links to news stories.
But Twitter works best with a little help from its friends, namely those programs that are designed to make it more customized and useful with minimal work on the user’s behalf. Here’s a rundown of just some of these helpers. I’m focusing only on ones that run on your computer, either in Web browsers or as stand-alone programs. There is also a plethora of Twitter applications that work on mobile devices like the iPhone and BlackBerry, too many to go into here. A few Twitter programs let you lurk and read tweets without a Twitter account, but in most cases these programs require a Twitter user name and password so they can better organize tweets of the people whom you follow.
To get a Twitter account in the first place, you will need to sign up with a user name and password at Twitter.com and start following people—or subscribing to read someone’s updates. These may be friends or people you simply find interesting, like journalists whose work you read (my Twitter user name is kabster728). You can see whom one person follows, and then opt also to follow those same people and the people those people follow and so on. Though it’s possible to lock your account so it’s private, very few people do so because Twitter encourages open communication throughout the Web.
That said, you can always choose to block someone from following you or stop following someone’s Twitter feed. You can comment on a tweet by sending the person who wrote it an “at reply,” named because the reply starts with the “@” sign followed by the user name of the person to whom you are replying. You can also send direct messages to another Twitter user as long as he or she is following you.
All-Purpose Programs
TweetDeck and Seesmic are two programs that do a good job of filtering others’ tweets and aiding the process of writing tweets. Both use Adobe Air, a tool that lets the program work in the background while continuously refreshing its content. This increases productivity because the programs can be set to display pop-up notifications whenever certain tweets appear.
TweetDeck (a free download at TweetDeck.com) organizes tweets into columns that you designate, such as a column of all tweets that mention your name, your company’s name or the word “Wimbledon.” It eases the process of writing tweets by building in ways to shorten Web links, post photos or translate a tweet into one of 35 languages. TweetDeck also integrates with Facebook so that one TweetDeck column displays your Facebook friends’ latest status updates.
The most recent version of TweetDeck enables synchronization of accounts with an email and password. This means that you can download TweetDeck on several computers, log into your account and see the same columns and settings on all platforms. The new version also includes fun extras like search within each column and the option to show how many followers a user has by displaying that number below his or her tweets.
Seesmic (a free download at seesmic.com) is another all-purpose Twitter program. It works much like TweetDeck, but has a few differences. Seesmic also integrates with Facebook, but does so in a more robust way, showing when Facebook friends share photos or Web links and letting you comment on or “like” someone’s status; TweetDeck only shows Facebook status updates.
Seesmic lets you drag photos into a small window for sharing via Twitter. But its overall look isn’t as visually appealing as TweetDeck’s and it lacks some of TweetDeck’s extra features.
Twhirl (twhirl.org) also runs on Adobe Air, working in the background as you use your computer for other activities. Like the aforementioned programs, it also enables easier tweeting with built-in tools for photo uploading and URL shrinking. Unlike TweetDeck and Seesmic, which focus on Twitter and Facebook, Twhirl enables logging into four types of accounts: Twitter, FriendFeed, Laconi.ca and Identica. But Twhirl shows only one category at a time, like a screen of replies, rather than showing all of these categories at a glance like TweetDeck and Seesmic.
Browser Power
Some Twitter programs run in browsers, not as stand-alone programs. This saves you from downloading a program on multiple computers because you can simply log into your account on any computer using its Web browser. But these programs won’t use the helpful pop-up notifications of Adobe Air; instead, you will need to look in your browser to see new information—like opening Twitter.com.
One such browser-based program is HootSuite (HootSuite.com), which uses an owl as its mascot. HootSuite’s unique features include its ability to set tweets to send at a later time or date, giving your followers the illusion that you are tweeting when you’re actually not, and a built-in statistic-tracker to measure how many people opened a link you posted using its ow.ly URL shortener. Like Twhirl, HootSuite shows only certain categories at a time rather than one overall glance at many categories of tweets.
Twitter.com is getting better, though it’s still weak compared with these other programs. I’ve used add-ons in my Firefox browser to enhance Twitter, and one called Power Twitter is like steroids for Twitter.com, adding photo uploading and link shortening right into the Web site. It also makes friends’ tweets richer by displaying details about any Web links that they share.
No Sign-Up Necessary
If you’re just curious about Twitter and want to see what people are talking about without signing up, try sites that are open to everyone. Twitterfall.com, for example, displays tweets about trending Twitter topics and custom search results in a waterfall-like visual with new tweets spilling over the top every half second. TwitterVision.com cleverly displays tweets around the world on a global map as they are posted, showing where the tweets are from, geographically.
Twitter isn’t limited to Twitter.com, and I wouldn’t likely use it as much were it not for programs like the ones I’ve mentioned and others. So give them a try and find out what makes Twitter useful for you.

Now we can see that everything can not leave Flash. Flash became more and more important, maybe some years later there will be not normal video format. You have to convert video to Flash.

Apple Rumor: $800 Tablet Due in October

The rumors may be getting closer to the truth, or vice versa, as a report surfaced from Taiwan today that Apple plans to releases its much discussed tablet computer this October. Guesstimated pricing: $800.
The Taiwanese site InfoTimes reports (in Chinese) that the device will have a 9.7-inch touchscreen, making it a tad smaller than most netbooks but adding touchcreen features and iPod mystique.
October would be a reasonable time for such an announcement, since Apple would be unlikely to announce much before availability in its stores, and such an announcement would be close enough to Christmas for the tablet to become 2009's hot gift item--at least for Apple fans.
InfoTimes sources its report to various supposed parts and manufacturing partners, which adds some weight to the rumor. As is usual, Apple won't say anything about new products and its partners also remain officially mum, at least if they want to remain an Apple partner.
The InfoTimes report is in broad agreement with earlier reports of an Apple tablet, then supposedly due in 2010. If the device is due in the next 9 months, October is a good choice for a release date.
Target market? The safe guess is that the tablet would be an oversized iPod touch, aimed primarily at entertainment users. However, for those used to sending email and doing other "work" on their iPhones, the tablet might be a pleasant step up, at least in terms of the size of its virtual keyboard.
While this is still the stuff of rumor, it seems to be circling in on something. The price makes sense, as does what little is heard of the specifications. Apple will want to have a hot new product for the holidays and a big-screen iPod makes a lot of sense as portable video gains in popularity.
This isn't the MacPad tablet computer that I'd like to see--I want a real keyboard--but the current rumor doesn't rule it out, either. And it may be that an Apple tablet computer and an iPod on steroids are better as separate devices.
If you want to put YouTube video in ipod, you need convert it to MP4 file. Or convert video to Flash

Microsoft's Flash-challenger Silverlight 3 hits web

The next version of Microsoft's Flash-challenger media player has hit the web, ahead of Friday's official launch.
The final Silverlight 3 runtime for users and software development kit (SDK) for programmers have been published to the web and were available for download as of Thursday afternoon. You can get the SDK here and player here.
The player comes in a package that Microsoft promised would download in 10 seconds, but it seems to take a little longer judging from my experiences.
Microsoft's plans a formal launch of Silverlight 3 at a San Francisco, California event Friday morning.
The release comes ahead of Microsoft's massive Worldwide Partner Conference, where the company will evangelize Silverlight 3 against Adobe Systems' Flash and creative tools.
Installing Silverlight 3 on the Mac
Version three closes many gaps in Microsoft's player that have held it back against Flash. Features include integration with a browser's forward and back button, ClearType for Windows and Mac, hardware acceleration, the ability to work offline and run outside the browser without an additional download. Plus there's support for touch-based input.
Partners also get a set of controls for charting and layout along with the (expected) integration with Visual Studio and the Expression Suite. While partners may be excited by Expression Suite, users of Flash - which dominates the media and interface market - will not be impressed.
Overall, however, version three should finally provide an alternative for Microsoft's design partners who are tired of handing off media and interface work video to Flash experts.
Silverlight is also an important part of Microsoft's online services. The player will enable a web-based version of Microsoft's Office suite called Office Web applications, unveiled last October.
Office Web applications are now expected to be released for testing at Microsoft's partner conference next Monday in New Orleans, Louisiana, following the report of some blatant Web 2.0 self-promotion by a Rackspace employee and Twittery hints from a Microsoft evangelist.
Office Web applications are part of the planned Office 2010 suite, and they're intended by Microsoft to answer Google Apps, which come with competing word, spreadsheet, and presentation tools.
Microsoft has said in the past that Silverlight would "light up" features in Office Web applications. It'll provide sharp images, integration with Office Live Workspace to upload multiple files, and also the ability to share and edit documents simultaneously in real time.

Adobe patches ColdFusion vulnerability blocking website attack

Adobe Systems Inc. has issued a patch fixing a vulnerability in its ColdFusion application development platform that left many websites at risk of intrusion.
The patch addresses ColdFusion security by turning off an uploading feature enabled by default blocking any attempt by a hacker to conduct a website attack.
According to the Adobe security bulletin, a vulnerability existed in FCKeditor, which is installed by default in ColdFusion 8. If left unpatched, the vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to upload files in arbitrary directories and ultimately lead to a system compromise.
"Adobe categorizes this as a critical issue and recommends affected users patch their installations," the software maker said in the security bulletin.
There were reports of limited attacks against some websites developed using ColdFusion. The SANS Internet Storm Center reported last week that attackers have been exploiting websites.
"The vulnerable installations allow the attackers to upload ASP or Cold Fusion shells which further allow them to take complete control over the server," wrote Bojan Zdrnja, a SANS ISC handler.
Adobe issued a hot fix to address the issue. The update turns off file upload capabilities by default and restricts access to cfm files in the FCKeditor filemanager directory. The fix can be applied using the ColdFusion Administrator.

NY rep. stands by Michael Jackson 'pervert' video

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York congressman who posted a YouTube video blasting Michael Jackson as a "pervert" and child molester is standing by his words.
In an interview that aired Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor," Rep. Peter King denied that there was anything racist in his remarks.
The Long Island Republican told host Bill O'Reilly that he "was saying what millions of Americans really felt."
In a 2003 documentary, Jackson admitted to letting children sleep with him in his bed at his California home but said it wasn't sexual. In 2005, a jury acquitted Jackson of charges that he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor.
King is among the possible Republican contenders for the seat held by Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand

Adobe's Flash to ship on new Android phone

Marking a departure from the world of iPhone, HTC's new Android-based Hero phone will also come with the ability to handle Flash elements that adorn many Web sites and power YouTube video.

Adobe Systems announced on Wednesday that its Flash Player will be built into the HTC phone, an important step in the company's efforts to spread Flash to mobile phones. The phone, one of several from HTC to use Google's open-source operating system, is scheduled to ship in Europe starting in July and in Asia and North America later in the year.

However, the initial version won't match Flash Player 10, the current version for PCs, which can run programs written with ActionScript 3. Instead, the Android version will handle ActionScript 2 applications written for Flash Player 9 chores, Adobe said. HTC is participating in the Open Screen Project to bring Flash Player 10 to mobile phones through over-the-air updates, though, so Adobe expects fuller Flash support eventually.

"Flash Player 10 for mobile platforms that include Android is expected to be available in the first half of 2010. We are working on delivering a beta of Flash Player 10 in the fourth quarter of 2009," the company said in a statement.

The Flash support will be built into the phone and not available as a download for other Android phone users, Adobe said.

Just having a check mark in a feature list isn't enough to outflank a competitor, but Flash is a significant feature on the Web. It powers many games, streaming videos, and dynamic stock charts, and other elaborate features on Web pages. And Flash is also used for many more dynamic advertisements.

Adobe demonstrated Flash on Android in an online video Wednesday, showing off the technology for watching a trailer at Yahoo Movies, playing the Penguin Swing game, and selecting a region on travel site Expedia. Double-clicking on the Flash element on the Web page runs it full screen.

Apple's iPhone doesn't run Flash, though Adobe would like to see it there and has been developing a version.

"We are developing Flash player for the iPhone. To release software on the iPhone requires Apple's agreement. We have to make it work great, and need to get their agreement to have it released," said Adobe chief technology officer Kevin Lynch in a 2008 interview. "We would love to see Flash on the iPhone."

After this people will not have to convert video to MP4, they need to convert video to Flash now.

How to get avi movies from pirates bay to play in my blackberry?

Can you download a codec into the blackberry (how)? Or do you really have to convert every AVI to Flash or to other formats through a long process?

This post borders on the illegal so I am going to assume the files you are downloading are legal trailers, not that it make a difference but it satisfies the not illegal rules of these boards.

First step is to make sure you have the proper codecs installed on your machine. You should be able to view the video with no problems on the machine that will do the conversion. If you cannot see the movie, you cannot convert it.

After you have those files you grab super. It’s free and it does the job well. The link is below. It’s pretty easy to use, find the file set the options and click convert.

These are the optimal settings for your video:
Output Format – MPEG4
Video Size – 320×240 or 240×260 for the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl
Video Bitrate – 400K
Audio Codec – MP3
Audio Bitrate – 48K at 22khz or 44khz (Personally 22Khz works fine)
Video Frame Rate – 30fps works fine but 24fps seems to be faster

Copy the file to your media card using BB Desktop Manager media app or enabling mass storage device on the unit and copying it to the mounted drive.

What File Format do you need to upload your video to YouTube, SWF, or FLV?

What file format do you need to upload your video to YouTube, S.W.F. or F.L.V, file format,
SWF…?

Whats the maximum video length…?

How many frames per second are best, what’s the minimus fps, you can set it too in Camtasia Studio 4…?

YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats such as .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, FLV and .MPG transferred from most digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones. For more info, u can check on google.
However, Youtube does not accept SWF file. If u want to upload SWF file to youtube, I think you have to use some swf to video converter to convert swf to avi, mpeg, mov, flv, etc video format, and then upload them to youtube.

But if you upload a regular video to YouTube sometime it will failure or take a long time. So normally I use Flash Video MX Pro to convert video to FLV and upload FLV directly. You can get this software here .

And you will find it is really a funny software, it also can convert FLV to SWF .

How do you make a flash video player with playlist support?

I am making a website and would like to know how to make a flash video player. I would like it to not copy information onto the viewers computer and have support to play multiple videos. I know I can do that with Flash 8 or above version but it is expensive and difficult to use.

So as usual I went to the Yahoo. And I find that speaking as a web developer, it's a waste of time to rewrite something that's already been written (in this case several times over). Try Flowplayer... it's simple to install, highly customizable, and free. It also support playlists for both music and video files.

http://flowplayer.org/

Or as I mentioned on my later post, I can use Flash Video MX Pro to convert video to flash and add a player on the video.

How do I create a video in macromedia flash 8?

I met a problem yesterday, after I have exported the flash and tryed a few other things but the flash want work on a website when it is published :(

So I went to google, and searched the solution. The following one helps me.

“When you have your file open, click: File, export, Export movie, and then in the "save as type" box select a movie format(.avi,.mov, or .gif). A great resource for flash problems is: http://www.kirupa.com/forum/”

Or I also find that I can just convert video to flash and upload to website instead of make one. That is easier. I find Moyea Flash Video MX Pro can help me to do that but it is not a free software. You know as a poor student I have to try another way, but unforturnitly I can not find a free software to do that, so I have to use the trail version of Flash Video MX Pro. And you know, with the logo of Moyea company.

What is a good and easy program to make flash videos?

We all know that we need a software to make Flash video, but Adobe's program is too dear and sometime we do not need such many functions. So if you want a good video to flash editor and encoder.

I think Moyea Flash Video MX Pro is perfect for you.
First, it can help you to edit your file. You can use it to trim your file, add watermark, add cuepoint, replace the source audio etc.

Second, it can help you to convert your video and DVD directly to FLV format. As we know Youtube like FLV files most. So if you video is regular format, youtube have to convert it on its server and sometimes it fails. So I suggest you to convert it to FLV format before you upload it and upload the flv directly.

Third, it also can insert FLV files directly. So if you already have a FLV file, you also can use it.

Or here are some other options

vixy.net/ - This service allows you convert a Flash Video / FLV file (YouTube's videos, etc) to MPEG4 (AVI/MOV/MP4/MP3/3GP) file online.

Check at download.com - download.com

Or just get yourself Macromedia Flash CS 4

Which is the best and cost effective solution for live video streaming and web casting?

A few days ago, my friend asked one question: “which is the best and most cost effective solution for live video streaming and webcasting on a website?”

So I searched this problem on google. There are some tools will be helpful:

1. A server-based video to flash video converter engine, like Adobe® Flash® Media Interactive Server 3, Flash Video MX SDK or other solutions to accomplish the same end goal.

2. A flash video player maker, like Moyea Web Player Pro, which can create a web page embedded with a web video (flash video) player with scrollable thumbnail playlist and skinnable control bar, you can add as many videos to the playlist of the player as you like. Or if you think it is too complicate you also can use Moyea Flash Video MX Pro to add a player on your video.

3. Database system, like MySQL, ORACLE or MSSQL...

web design and programming development tools, like Dreamweaver, Firework, Flash, PHP...

4. Broadcaster StudioPRO enables you to broadcast video files, desktop activity or streaming video via your webcam. The program acts as a virtual camera drive, and you can configure any webcam application (e.g Yahoo Messenger, Live Messenger, Skype etc.) to use the Broadcaster driver instead of your regular camera. Broadcaster will then act as a proxy between your webcam and the application, allowing you to switch between live webcam capture and broadcasting of saved files, or even desktop activity. In addition, the program also enables you to broadcast to multiple applications, allowing you to use your webcam with more than one messenger application at the same time. Broadcaster StudioPRO can also be used to record video playback from other media players or web browsers by placing the recording frame over the video area and recording it. The video can then be saved as MPEG, MP4, AVI or VOB file. The program offers some unique features, we particularly liked the ability to send desktop activity via Live Messenger (or other applications). The lack of detailed documentation however will make it difficult to use for novice users.

Why can't I post a video on youtube?

Yesterday my brother meet some problem when he post a video on YouTube, but for some reason he keep on getting “Upload failed (unable to convert video file)”
He asked me what does that mean. Well I think there are many reasons can cause it.

First of all let us know some common sense: YouTube likes FLV video most, so before you upload them please make sure your video is compatible with YouTube, otherwise youtube will convert the video on its sever, this process will take a long long time and some time it fails (because of the file is too big or Youtube can not recognize the file’s format or something else.)

I suggest him to convert video to Flash on his computer before he uploads it, it would be much faster.
I ask him to try Moyea Flash Video MX because it can convert nearly every video format and DVD directly to FLV.

Are there any health risks in drinking to much lime juice?

Q: I know there are many benefits in drinking lime juice, but does drinking to much of it have any health risks?

A: Yes. Anything acidic can cause enamel erosion of teeth. After drinking your juice you should rinse your teeth and gums with water. You can end up with a very sore behind from all the acid in the lime (think about elimination!). But what exactly do you mean by "too many"? Are you ingesting 2-5 pounds daily? I would think if you just had 1-2 drinks a day of lime juice that this would be okay. The vitamin C is excellent for you. Listen to your body; it will usually let you know when you've had enough.

What do you think of Chavez saying that Obama is to the left of him and Fidel with the Nationalization of GM?

Q: What do you think of Chavez saying that Obama is to the left of him and Fidel with the Nationalization of GM?
Here is the article: http://www.reuters.com/article/ObamaEconomy/idUSTRE5520GX20090603?feedType=RSS&feedName=ObamaEconomy&virtualBrandChannel=10441

A: This is the first thing that Hugo Chevez has ever said, that I agree with. Obama is a Marxist, and in this country we tar and feather Marxists!

Never, in the history of this nation, has it found itself at the mercy of one very destructive man. A man with an agenda to embolden his Muslim brotherhood. The same brotherhood that started this nation on a path of self destruction on 9/11. Next with the acceptance of this individual as its president.

We need to find a solution to this problem, and four years of this will be too little, too late. We need some ideas folks!

The performance page is very comprehensive to compare and choose from the hundreds of expert trading signal providers: you can filter the trade signal providers by profit ($), max draw down, profit factor; date started, average pip profit, winning percentage, and currency pair. You can also set your maximum number of trades that you wish to be open for your trading account, your lot sizes per signal provider, or maximum stop losses per trade provider. Right away you can pick up to 10 different signal providers, choose pairs and lot sizes, and have the platform take over from there, automatically trading your account with your selected trading signals. Your computer does not need to be on for the signals to be traded in your account, as this service uses a remote server.

Now, to go live with a live auto traded accounts there are a few rules. Your trading account minimum investment is $1000. Also, Avafx charges you 1 pip commission on each round trip trade on top of their normal spread to use their autotrade system. Seem unfair? Not really. Comparing ZuluTrade to Avafx Auto Trader, Avafx actually comes out on top. Yes, ZuluTrade does not charge a commission, however comparing the best signal providers; Avafx appears to have the best performing signals. Avafx’s performance comparison is actually much more user-friendly than ZuluTrade’s performance page: you can quickly compare important trading system factors like risk adjustment rate (RAR) and profit factor which cannot even be determined on ZuluTrade. Both do provide maximum drawdown for each signal provider, which is one of the most important. But when looking at the RAR, total pips accumulated divided by max draw down, the Avafx providers have a much better RAR than the ZuluTrade signals providers. Is that worth the 1 pip commission per trade? Absolutely. Now, if your trading account is $50,000 or more, you are then a VIP level account which means you will not be charged the 1 pip commission and you will get a better deal on the spreads as well. Another thing to note: Avafx is an approved broker for ZuluTrade. So, if you try out Avafx Auto Trader signals and are not impressed, then it will be very easy to set up a ZuluTrade account using Avafx as your broker.

On the negative side, the Help section and Support Center are not very helpful regarding the Auto Trader. However, the Live chat help was very responsive and they answered most of my questions quickly. There was one question that remains with Auto Trader: there is a very large disclaimer at the bottom of the trading platform about “Hypothetical trading results and performance data”. It is unclear if Avafx Auto Trader signals providers are using live trading accounts or DEMO accounts for their trading performance data. I would think that DEMO trading is likely to be less accurate than live trading performance data. Avafx support did not answer this question directly. Also the Avafx Auto Trader does not have the Margin-call-ometer that ZuluTrade does, which is a very nice feature that explains and guards against account margin calls. However, Avafx’s platform does have some decent features to help clients remain positive and not margin call their accounts.

In writing this review, only a demo account was used to try out the system and platform. Avafx insists that the platform and service are identical whether trading demo or live with them.

Overall the Avafx Auto Trader receives 4 stars and comes highly recommended.

What causes dandruff?

Q: What causes dandruff?

A: The condition of your hair is a reflection of your body's general health. Its condition changes for the worse with stress, nutritional deficiencies, hormone shifts, and environmental factors. The real culprit when it comes to dandruff may be a fat-eating, yeast-like fungus called molasses, formerly known as pityro sporum.

Molasses lives on the scalps of most healthy adults without causing problems. But sometimes it grows out of control, feeding on the oils secreted by your hair follicles and causing irritation that leads to increased cell turnover.

All skin cells die and are replaced by new cells. Normally, it takes about a month for new cells to move from the lowest layer of your skin, where they form, to the outermost layer, where they die and scale off in flakes. Because cells renew themselves slowly, this process usually isn't noticeable.

But on scalps where malassezia thrives, the whole process can take as little as 11 days. The result is a large number of dead skin cells. As the cells fall off, they tend to clump together with oil from your hair and scalp, making them appear white, flaky and all too visible.

Mayo Clinic's recommendations for dandruff self-care are:
Learn to manage stress.
Shampoo often.
Cut back on styling products.
Eat a healthy diet.
Get a little sun.

How can i quickly make water safe for fish without a dechlorinator?

Q: I got a goldfish from a fair. I have a fishbowl but i cant get to a pet store any time soon to buy dechlorinator. If i boil water for 10 minutes and cool it to room temp will it be safe for my fish?

A: It depends on what your water source is and how it is treated to make it safe to drink. If you are on well water, you're possibly good to go as is. If you are on city water, you may be in for some trouble. The old method was to "age" water, you let it set for at least 24 hours and the chlorine would evaporate out. Now though, many places use chloramines instead of or in addition to chlorine, and it HAS to be chemically deactivated.
Distilled is not a good choice, as it can cause something called osmotic shock, which can kill your fish. If you absolutely have to use distilled water, change only half the water. It will still shock your fish some, but it's better than the ammonia buildup.
If you want your Goldie to live a long healthy life, it will need an absolute minimum 10 gallon tank if it is a fancy type, 20 if it's a common (they get bigger).

How do I respond?

Q: I made a video for All American Rejects' Gives You Hell Video Contest and uploaded it as a video response as instructed. Now, months later, YouTube is sending me a copyright warning, even though I clearly had permission to upload it, along with the other 96 fans who had permission to upload theirs. How do I respond to this?

A: Aruna:

We need to cover a few issues.

A. Is the video content yours? As in, did you shoot the video on your own camera and edit the video yourself?

B. You used the song "Gives You Hell," only, and no other audio? Or did you include other audio elements?

C. Did you post the video as a RESPONSE to the original AAR video on YouTube? (That is a requirement from Interscope Records.. see http://www.video-to-flash.com/flv_video_converter/ your video must be a RESPONSE to that video.)

IF your video content is original. And IF the only audio in the clip is the AAR song. And IF you uploaded your video as a "response" to the video above, you should respond as such to YouTube.

Generally speaking, YouTube only issues copyright violation notifications if a copyright holder notifies them first.

In other words, Interscope Records likely initiated the complaint against you.

Let me know if you need more help.

Is it still littering if it's biodegradable?

Q: Is it okay to throw like an apple core on the ground, for example?

A1 : Yes it is littering, even if you are out in the woods and you know it will be eaten by animals. You would be providing a food that isn't part of the animals natural diet and unless you are a stickler about organic, you would be dosing the animal with pesticides.

In a populated area you are providing food for rats and other undesirable creatures. There populations are controlled by the amount of food available.

A2 : It's still littering (putting something on the ground in a public space!), but I never feel guilty about throwing things like orange peels or apple cores on the ground if there's no garbage to hand and I don't have a convenient place to store it until I get to one. Things like biodegradable bags or cardboard or whatnot are a different story- they take way longer to decompose, and belong someplace where they can do that without marring the scenery.

A3 : It is still littering, by law but it will help the environment... unless it gets in the ocean and small animals try to eat it and it gets caught in their system.
Instead of doing that you could wait to take it home and even better than throwing it in the garbage: Composting! For vermicomposting: You just have to get a large bin and soil. Then put in some Red Wiggler or Indian Blue worms. Throw all of your vegetable and fruit peelings and leftovers in there, eventually the worms will eat it an poop. The poop is called vermicast and it is rich, nutrient full soil.

A4 : I would say that this is still littering in its technical defition. However, if you want to throw an apple core on the ground, you can do so in your front or backyard. But in public spaces, i wouldn't. Although I see what you mean, just because feces are good for the Earth doesn't mean that we leave it lying around!! (Sorry that was the only example i could come up with=P)

I would also say that instead of throwing it on the ground, you can speed up the process by composting it. So instead of throwing a biodegradable object on the ground, go compost it!!

How Many Hours does the Lenovo s10 have?

Q: How many hours do you get out of a 3 cell battery? And out of a 6 cell battery? Which do you think is better?

A: The 6 cell battery will provide you with a much longer charge. But depending on what the computer has in it such as the video card and how much power it uses determines how long it will last. The average time is about 2 hours in power save mode.

You can also use it to convert YouTube or almost any format.

How do I know how many volts my socket will support? 10 pts!!?

Q: I am hopelessly trying to get my wall a/c situation correct, and I am just wondering if there is a way to tell the different between a 110v and a 220v socket (or whatever the 2 standard voltages are...)

I will surely award 10 points to the best answer, and check back to see if I need to provide you with additional information!!!

A: 110 and 220 plugs are different. And its amps when talking about load and ac units. Most 5000-12000 btu will run on a 110 outlet with a 20amp breaker. Bigger units usually need 220 and it should be stamped on the unit on a panel or near where the wire comes out of the unit. 220 plugs are on your dryer and stove if they are electric for comparison.

that an adult can ignore?

How do I upload a complete movie onto YouTube? I need to upload them into 10 minutes segments but how to?

Q:I've seen others upload their complete movies in 10 minutes segments example : part 1 to part 7 of the movie. I want to know how to do that. Please give me a step by step instructions. Thanks.

A: Just figure ur time out that the movie is and use a movie editing program to make 10 min segments..... How do I edit my video?

Most computers come with some sort of video editing application already installed, such as Apple iMovie or Microsoft Movie Maker. Using these programs, you can easily edit your videos, add soundtracks, change the file type, compress the file size, etc.

There are also more advanced editing programs available for purchase or download online. We encourage you to look around and find the editing software that's right for you.....Youll have to read the help file in whatever program ya choose to use to find out how to do it....Once you break((EDIT)) the movie up into 10 min or less segments you just title each segment ((Example: Hercules and the fire god Part-1 and the next one in order of the film the same way only instead of part-1 ya put Part-2 and so on )) then up-load each to youtube.....OR you can read this....READ THE DESCRIPITON! -if you have a windows movie maker file (and if you know how to use windows movie maker) and cannot upload the video then read this it should be saved as a .wmv file then go to this url: If you have windows XP watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kRHP8... If you have windows vista then watch this video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=5OlYRFGamFQ it should teach you how to make a windows movie maker project ( a .mswmmm) file into a .wmv file.

Why do onions make you cry?

Q: Why do onions make you cry?
A: It is not the strong odor of the onion that makes us cry, but the gas that the onion releases when we sever this member of the lily family.

The onion itself contains oil, which contains sulfur, an irritant to both our noses and to our eyes. Cutting an onion arouses a gas contained within the onion, propanethiol S-oxide, which then couples with the enzymes in the onion to emit a passive sulfur compound. When this upwardly mobile gas encounters the water produced by the tear ducts in our eyelids, it produces sulfuric acid.

In response to the caustic acid, our eyes automatically blink, and produce tears which irrigate the eye, and which flush out the sulfuric acid.

Another reflex to rid the eyes of a foreign substance, that of rubbing our eyes with our hands, often exacerbates the situation, because our hands are coated with the caustic, sulfuric acid producing oil from cutting the onion, which we then rub directly into our eyes.

Much to our chagrin, the only remedy for ridding the onion of its pungent, irritating oil is to boil it, not to slice it or dice it.
